Laser Clean NI was contracted to carry out specialist corrosion and coating removal from structural steelwork as part of a major infrastructure project in Northern Ireland.
The existing steelwork had developed significant corrosion and coating deterioration after years of service and required preparation ahead of inspection, repair and protective recoating.
The project involved heavily corroded structural steelwork in a challenging working environment where access, containment and the surrounding area all had to be considered when selecting the surface preparation method.
Laser cleaning provided a controlled method of removing corrosion and deteriorated coatings without introducing abrasive blasting media into the surrounding environment.
Our laser cleaning system was used to progressively remove heavy rust, corrosion and deteriorated coatings from the affected steelwork.
The process exposed the underlying steel, allowing its condition to be assessed and preparing the structure for subsequent repair and protective recoating.
Laser cleaning was particularly suited to this application due to its ability to provide controlled, localised surface preparation while avoiding the additional blasting media associated with conventional abrasive methods.
The completed surface preparation removed substantial corrosion and deteriorated coatings, exposing the underlying steel for the next stages of the refurbishment programme.
This project demonstrates the potential of laser cleaning for structural steel corrosion removal, particularly where access, containment or the surrounding environment can make conventional abrasive blasting more difficult.
