What is laser cleaning and how does it work on structural steel?

Laser cleaning uses a high-powered laser beam to irradiate the surface of metal. The laser energy is absorbed by contaminants such as rust, paint, oil and mill scale, causing them to vapourise or detach from the substrate without affecting the underlying steel. It is a non-contact, non-abrasive process that removes contamination precisely and selectively — leaving a clean, profiled surface ideal for protective coating adhesion.

Will laser cleaning damage the steel structure or substrate?
No. Laser cleaning parameters are carefully calibrated for each specific application. The laser selectively targets the contaminant layer without penetrating the base material. Unlike abrasive blasting, there is no mechanical force applied to the substrate, meaning there is zero risk of pitting, thinning or dimensional changes to structural components. We carry out test patches on every new job to confirm settings before full-scale work begins.
Can you work on occupied or live facilities?
Yes. One of the significant advantages of laser cleaning over abrasive blasting is that it requires no containment sheeting, produces no media pollution and generates minimal waste. We work regularly inside live warehouses, factories and operational facilities with no disruption to production or occupancy. All work is carried out under a RAMS (Risk Assessment and Method Statement) appropriate to the site conditions.
How long does a protective coating system last after laser cleaning?
Laser preparation creates an exceptionally clean, profiled surface that significantly extends coating lifespan compared to mechanically prepared surfaces. Depending on the coating system specified and the exposure environment, our protective coatings regularly achieve 15–25 years of service life with minimal maintenance. We specify all coating systems to BS EN ISO 12944 appropriate to the corrosivity category of the environment.
Do you cover areas outside Northern Ireland?
Yes. While our base is in Ballymena, County Antrim, we regularly carry out projects throughout Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and mainland Great Britain. For larger contracts we can deploy multi-team operations to meet programme requirements. Travel and mobilisation costs are included transparently in our quotations — contact us with your project location for a tailored response.
What information do you need to provide a quotation?
For a meaningful fixed-price quotation we need to understand the surface area involved, the type and severity of contamination, access conditions and any programme constraints. We offer a free site visit to assess all of these factors and provide a detailed written specification and price.
